Weaknesses: Ciel has little interest in developing human relationships. In a way, he’s maintained status quo since his parents died, doing only enough to keep what he has and not really aspiring to gain any new acquaintances. Those friends he has managed to gain occur mostly by accident, or through someone other than himself. He trusts very few, even among his allies, preferring to rely on his own cunning and the power of Sebastian’s contract. The last, most obvious weakness is his frail childlike body. He’s had asthma since he was very young, so most physical activities are beyond him. Fencing is the most he can manage, as long as his medicine is kept on hand at all times. Despite being useful on occasion, his size also represents a direct line to his pride. Passing for a girl at the age of 13 is very emasculating to a young nobleman.
Strengths: In a way, Ciel’s strengths coincide with his weaknesses. His greatest strength is his clear cut resolve and relentless tenacity. His desire to fulfill his quest for revenge consumes most of the moral quandaries that get in his way, enabling him to surviving in the grey world of Elizabethan London. Despite the shadowed veil of hatred surrounding his heart, Ciel still manages to keep the core of his existence pure and unblemished by the hardships he’s endured. He puts on a good show of callous indifference, but in the end he doesn’t like hurting people who haven’t earned their punishment.
Personality Traits
Appearance: Small, almost childlike in appearance. Even in heeled shoes Ciel barely reaches over 5 feet. That, coupled with his fair, delicate features and slight build allows him to pass as a girl even at the age of 13. Most of the upper-class social stratosphere believes that Ciel lost his eye during his imprisonment, and he enforces that belief by donning an eye patch whenever he appears in public. His right eye, once a brilliant midnight blue, darkened to a violent shade of purple when Sebastian’s contract was sealed. He wears his charcoal grey hair in a long boy cut, allowing his bangs to grow long on the right side in a half-conscious attempt to draw attention away from his branded eye. He doesn’t find any joy in clothing, but the pride of the Phantomhive family compels him to dress in a manner befitting an Earl in the Queen’s service—that is, assuming he has someone to do up his shirt buttons. As far as accessories go, he wears fashionable top hats, stud earrings, and often carries an ornate cane. He is seldom seen without two rings. One is his father’s emerald-cut blue diamond ring, which Ciel wears on his left thumb because it is too big for his other fingers. The other is a gold family crest which he wears on his right hand and uses primarily for pressing the wax seal on official letters and documents.
Personality: Proud, resolute, and cunning. Ciel stands on high ground, not for the sake of morality, but to get the best view of the battleground at his feet. He’s not above getting his hands dirty if it comes down to it, but he prefers to utilize all available resources before taking such drastic measures himself. Most people perceive Ciel as a cold child sitting in a grown man’s chair. He prides himself in his high social status, and is a proper English gentleman above all else. His behavior and intellect are often so at odds with his appearance, his visitors feel utterly lost about how to approach him. Most of the pompous social big-wigs who make the mistake of underestimating the young Earl leave Phantomhive manor feeling like they bought a puppy and ended up with a wolf. Ciel’s dark sense of humor does little to dissuade that impression. As a chess master and toy connoisseur, he likes to play games with adversaries before they run home screaming. Despite this general playfulness, Ciel is not generous with his emotions. His default expression runs from indifference to disdain. Genuine smiles are harder to win than his trust. The few people he does trust, he treasures, but will never admit to or wholeheartedly accept any affection in public—especially in front of Sebastian. Ciel equates affection with weakness and fears that if he cares too much it will more painful when his contract is finally fulfilled. He’ll put up with casual touching if he genuinely cares about the person or if it benefits his personal agenda, but he generally hates being touched by strangers or people lower than him on the social ladder, both because it makes him feel inferior and because it brings back memories of his imprisonment.
History: Born on December 14th, 1875, Ciel grew up happily with everything a young heir could wish for until his 10th birthday, when his home was burned to the ground, his family murdered, and he himself was kidnapped and sold to a religious cult. During his imprisonment he was branded, abused both physically and sexually, and eventually used as a sacrifice. It was at this moment when he summoned Sebastian and brought the entire cult down in a vengeful fury. Determined to find the real culprit behind the whole ordeal, Ciel returned home to rebuild Phantomhive manor with a dark butler at his side. Since then he has maintained the outward face of the Funtom Company and kept up his family’s role as the Queen’s Watchdog, waiting for a chance to complete his revenge and fulfill his contract.
